• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Sloga -- Redundancy without substance or prose! : I was really looking forward to this book, as an observer over the years, seeing the Valentine brand building and then tumbling. I wondered what it was like behind the scenes, what it was like to live the lie day to day, stories of real life instances, is what I was expecting. As a parent, sibling, family member to many gays, I sought more authenticity from this book. Sadly, the book is pages of memes, quotes, cliches, faux inspiration, real estate puns and quite a bit of bragging and self congratulations. A book of redundancy without substance.. Not at all what I was hoping for. There is very little cohesion to the thought process and explanation of the ‘coming out”. There is NO prose in YOU! Austin you nailed it....so much truth in your book. I personally am so proud of you, I have watched you over the past 5 years and could there were some dark days. I am a trained psych nursing professional and my husband is a huge LGBTQ supporter, as he knew years ago when training as a pediatric urologist, involved with patients with intersex issues, that you are born that way. Still with our professional experience and knowledge, I was overwhelmed with Austins description of his being in the closet all of his life and the impact it has had on him. I would venture to bet on this— the development of a personality which appears as narcissism in intersex individuals is really just a survival method which has naturally kicked in to gear for the real intellectual and that’s why we see so many gay moguls of any field; medicine, Plastic surgery, real estate, or whatever because it is who they HAD TO be to survive the tortuous closet in which they were forced to live. It's very hard to except yourself in a society where you are constantly being judged by everyone. This book is motivational and recommended to anyone who needs some words of wisdom. Austin tells his story on how he was hiding the fact he was gay which he did things he is not proud of, all while living in a relationship full of abuse. Once he realized that enough was enough and he had to focus on himself to move one, now he is living the dream life as anyone should. if you are going through something I highly recommend this book.
